M. E. Hossain is a Professor in the department of Petroleum Engineering, School of Mining and Geosciences at the Nazarbayev University, Astana, Kazakhstan. Prior to working at Nazarbayev University, Prof. Hossain hold the position at Memorial University (MUN), Canada as Statoil Research Chair in Reservoir Engineering. He also worked at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM), Saudi Arabia; Ryerson University and Dalhousie University, Canada; Sultan Qaboos University (SQU), Oman; Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), and Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET), Bangladesh. Currently, he is an Adjunct/Visiting Professor in several other universities. He also worked with the petroleum industry for over nine years.
Prof. Hossain earned a B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) in 1995, and an M.Sc. in Petroleum Engineering from a collaboration between University of Alberta, Canada and BUET in 2001. Prof. Hossain completed a Ph.D. in Petroleum Engineering in 2008 and a MBA degree in 2009 both at Dalhousie University, Canada.
In over 24 years, Prof. Hossain authored and/or co-authored more than 180 research articles focusing on reservoir modeling, reservoir simulation, reservoir characterization, enhanced oil recovery (EOR), drilling fluid, drilling waste, and environmental sustainability. Prof. Hossain wrote seven books on Petroleum Engineering, and two textbooks on Fundamentals of Sustainable Drilling Engineering published by Wiley and Scrivener Publishing, USA. Two additional books are in press: two books will cover drilling issues and solutions, and one book will focus on reservoir simulation. Prof. Hossain’s main contribution to the industry is the introduction for the first time of memory concept for a petroleum application. For conducting research activities on reservoir engineering, EOR, drilling waste management, and development of new sustainable drilling fluid and additives, Prof. Hossain has secured over five million Saudi riyal funding from Saudi Aramco, NSTIP, and the Saudi government. As a Statoil Research Chair in reservoir engineering at Memorial University, he has funding of approximately two and half million dollars received from Statoil, NSERC, RDC, and Memorial. In the last six years, he completed over seven million Saudi riyal projects funded by Saudi Aramco, NSTIP, and KFUPM in diverse area of petroleum engineering. In recognition of his research and teaching excellence, he has received numbers of awards.
Prof. Hossain has been teaching a wide spectrum of petroleum engineering courses, such as drilling engineering, reservoir engineering, reservoir simulation, petroleum economics, production engineering, reservoir rock properties, EOR etc. Designed to clients’ needs, he gives short courses, workshops, and seminars in the area of petroleum engineering. Currently Prof. Hossain has 23 (i.e., 11 Ph.D., and 12 M.Sc.) graduate students. Prior to this, 27 students graduated in M.Sc. and Ph.D. level under his supervision. His research team include research associates, Ph.D. students, and M.Sc. students. Prof. Hossain is the associate editor of Journal of Nature Science and Sustainable Technology (JNSST), Journal of Characterization and Development of Novel Materials (JCDNM), Nova Science Publishers, USA and Journal of Sustainable Energy Engineering (JSEE), Scrivener and Welly publishing, USA. He also acts as a reviewer for several international journals including Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) journals. He has been an active member of a number of international societies, including the SPE. Prof. Hossain is the founder and Chairman of Aziza Trust (www.azizatrust.com) and was on the Board of directors of Aziza group in Bangladesh, Bright Coral in Canada.
